What is the procedure to become a Teacher?
To start off, it is very important to be passionate about teaching. It isn’t an easy job, it requires a lot of patience and willpower.
After completing 12th grade in the stream of your choice, namely science, arts or commerce, you are required to complete your undergrad and obtain a bachelor’s degree with a good percentage.
Then you can choose to take the NET (National eligibility test) which is the qualifying exam for teaching in a college. You must have a minimum of 55% aggregate in the postgraduate program to appear for these exams. Apart from the national level exams, there are state-level exams as well; i.e. state eligibility tests (SETs) through which one can become professors in Best Engineering Colleges in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh etc.
One can either do research work or take up the exam. Clearing the NET is a necessity for most teachers to be teaching in colleges/universities. Clearing the exam means that you can apply to be a teacher anywhere in institutes all over India. The exam is held twice in a year, once in June and then in December. If you clear the SET, it means you can apply to any university within the state that you have taken up the exam in.
Apart from this, there are many other exams one can take depending on the field of interest and state you live in. For instance, one can take up the REET exam, which stands for Rajasthan Eligibility exam for teachers which is a three-tier examination for teaching posts in Rajasthan. It is taken up by many people looking for state government jobs.
Responsibilities of a Teacher:
Apart from clearing examinations and having the knowledge, it is also very important to have good communication skills in order to put forward your views and ideas to an audience in a simple way that is easy to understand.
Being a teacher does not only involve mainstream teaching. It also involves clerical work like computing the grades of students, maintaining student records, setting up examinations etc.
It is important for a teacher to be interactive and innovative enough to come up with new ways of teaching which are appealing to the audience. A teacher also plays a role in counseling students, be it career counseling or personal counseling.
